Protecting you home in extreme weather

Protecting you home in extreme weather

Stay in the know

- Make sure you know what the easiest way to get in touch with your insurer is – many will have 24-hour emergency helplines during severe weather.

- Check with claims advisors to find out what your insurer covers. The cost of moving to alternative accommodation may be covered, as may emergency repairs to prevent damage from getting worse.

- If it’s safe to use electrical equipment, make sure you’re keeping up-to-date with the latest flood and weather warnings.

 Get ready

- Store important documents, including your insurance policy details, in a watertight bag that you put in a dry, accessible place (somewhere upstairs, ideally).

- Make a list of the most useful phone numbers that you’ll need. Start with your insurer, your local council, the emergency services and Floodline (0845 988 1188).

- Take many photos of your house, this could help with the settlement of a claim.

 Have a plan of action

- Clear your drains and gutters – this will mean that rainfall can be drained from your home more effectively.

- If you have any outdoor furniture or items that are likely to float in the event of a flood, make sure they are secure and restrained if possible.

- Nearly half of all claims are due to roof damage, and issues with garage and shed doors are also common. Taking basic steps to keep these safe could make a big difference, but don’t put yourself in danger by attempting repairs. Keep doors closed and locked, and plastic sheets or tarpaulins can be used to temporarily fix a damaged roof.

- Put electrical items and valuables in high cupboards where they’ll be safer. If you can take them upstairs, that’s even better.

- Make sure you’ve drawn up an evacuation plan for your family. It reduces the risk of injury for everyone and it will give you more time to save items of sentimental or material value.

If you’re hit by storms or flooding

- Firstly, get in touch with your insurer as soon as possible. Your temporary repairs may be covered.

- Once again, take photos of any damage. This will help with the settlement of your claim.

- Don’t throw away any possessions without discussing it with a claims advisor, as these will need to be assessed.

- Don’t use the electricity or gas before it has undergone the necessary checks by a qualified tradesman (beware exploitative and opportunistic rogue traders).

- Finally, don’t attempt to fix damage if it puts you at risk of injury.
