How to decorate your hallway

Friday 12th April 2013

You have often heard of the phrase "first impressions count", the same applies when welcoming guests into your home. When guests enter the first place they see is your hallway. You want to make it warm and welcoming to your guests.

Make a statement in your hallway. Here we will explore different ways to make an impression when your guests enter your home.

• Create an eye-catching wall piece- Experiment with bold wallpaper and bright patterns. Plain white walls can look dull not to mention that they are very hard to keep clean.
• Choose a strong carpet- If your prefer neutral walls then it is best to choose a colourful carpet for the hall to enliven the room. Make sure you choose a durable carpet as this area of the home has contact traffic.
•Finishing touches- To really make your hall stand out it is important to add those little bits and bobs like flowers or photos. It adds to that personal welcoming touch.

If your hallway is narrow or dark it is essential to get the lighting right.

• It is important to make the most of natural light- A great way to enhance natural light is to add mirrors in the hallway as they will reflect the natural light. Mirrors also give the impression of more space.
• Position spotlights in the hallway- Spotlights really create that warm welcoming feeling and look fantastic also.
• Install a skylight- This can create a huge difference to small hallways

Hallways are great for storing those things you need before leaving the house like keys or coats.

• Add a side table in your hallway by the front door. This is an ideal spot for setting car keys and post when you come home. Flowers and photographs also set off a side table.
• Key holder- Choose a decorative key holder, one that really stands out. These are essential for those in the family who are too fond of losing keys!
